(Sep. 11, 2008) On August 26, 2008, in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, President José Manuel Zelaya Rosales signed an agreement making Honduras a member of the international cooperation organization ALBA, whose acronym in English stands for the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas or the Bolivarian Alternative for the People of Our America. Currently the member states of this organization are Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Dominica, and Honduras. (Honduras se suma al ALBA: No pedimos permiso a ningún imperialismo [Honduras Joins ALBA: We Do Not Ask for the Permission of Any Imperialism], GRANMAINTERNACIONAL DIGITAL (in Spanish), Aug. 26, 2008, available at http://www.granma.cu/espanol/2008/agosto/mar26/honduras.html.)
ALBA, first proposed by Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez Frías, is an alternative to the Free Trade Area of the Americas, which sought to reduce or eliminate obstacles that would hinder trade. However, ALBA's mission is not limited exclusively to endeavors of commerce and trade. Rather, it is based "upon a model of politic[al], economic and social integration" among the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. ( El ALBA en el Caribe: I. What is the ALBA?, Portal ALBA: Alternativa Bolivariana para los pueblos de Nuestra América (in English), Sept. 10, 2008, available at http://www.alternativabolivariana.org/pdf/alba_mice_en.pdf.)
